AT A
GLANCE

Exploring if communication tools could use technology to recreate the feeling of being physically together, Google’s Project Starline combines hardware and software advancements in AI, ML, computer vision, spatial audio, and light field display to make the experience possible.

Project Starline aims to revolutionize virtual communication using technology to create lifelike, 3D models of people in real-time that makes users feel as though they are physically present with one another, even when they are miles apart. To help train their AI recognition systems, they tagged our team to recruit thousands of diverse participants.

Google describes the experience as looking through a “magic window”, allowing for natural eye contact and gestures during virtual conversations where users can interact as if they are in the same room.

Our team played a crucial role in enhancing the accuracy and effectiveness of Project Starline's recognition systems. We recruited thousands of diverse participants using the Monk Skin Tone Scale (MST) to train and test these systems at Google’s campuses and our Bay Area usability lab. This extensive testing ensures that Project Starline can reliably create realistic and immersive communication experiences for users across different backgrounds and environments.

THE
OUTCOMES

Google’s internal and partner testing has found that Project Starline significantly improves the attention, engagement and memory recall during virtual meetings. The technology is in the stages of transitioning to commercial use, with prototypes being developed in partnership with HP and aimed at broader deployment by 2025.

Our data training work is ongoing, and our team continues to recruit and supply quality data to help train Project Starline’s recognition systems.
